Safety & Loss Control is Provided by Safety Benefits, Inc.

On behalf of the SDML Workers’ Compensation Fund, Safety Benefits, Inc. will do training, safety audits, and provide information to the SDML WC Fund Members to allow them to provide a safer workplace for their employees. These risk management services are free to members of the SDML Work Comp Fund.

By identifying and analyzing risks, a safety and loss control program can help members reduce the frequency and severity of claims by being proactive rather than reactive As a result, Members are able to protect their most important resources by eliminating and minimizing accidents and the possible resulting claims. 

Online Safety Training Courses

This safety training is available through a web based program called NEO GOV Learn. It allows members of the SDML Work Comp Fund to choose from hundreds of workplace safety training topics. These online courses are a great option when assigning safety training to individual employees.

Online Streaming Safety Training

Streaming safety videos are available on a wide range of safety topics. Because there is no need to advance a computer screen to keep the course moving forward these videos are an excellent option for group training and safety meetings.

2024 SDML WC Fund Grant Applications

The SDML WC Fund Board of Trustees has approved funding for the 2024 grant programs for Stryker EMS Equipment, Stan Houston ICS Chop Saw and Trenching and Confined Space Entry Equipment.

Applications will be accepted beginning January 1st, 2024.

The applications for all three grants are available at www.sdmlwcfund.com/grant applications or by clicking on the links in this email. Apps must be submitted to the SDML WC Fund no later than December 31, 2024. Grants are awarded on a first come first received basis and it is likely that the grant funds will be exhausted before 12/31/2024, so apply early.

2024 Annual MSHA Safety Training Classes

NOTICE This training may be required for streets, highways, or public works employees!

Mine Safety & Health Act (MSHA) Part 46.8
Employees involved in mining, including those working at gravel pits, are required to receive 8 hours of annual refresher training as outlined in the entity’s written training plan. These classes meet MSHA annual refresher training requirements.

General Safety Training
For those not required to comply with MSHA, be sure to review the training topics offered and consider sending your employees. A minimal investment of time may help your entity meet safety training goals, manage risks, and avoid work-related injuries. These classes qualify for 5 contact hours toward Water/Wastewater Operator Recertification.

2024 EMS Safety & Loss Control Recognition Awards

Safety Benefits, Inc., on behalf of the SDML Workers’ Compensation Fund and the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance, is pleased to share the criteria for the 2024 EMS Safety and Loss Control Recognition Awards. The purpose of these awards is to promote loss control and safety awareness and recognize the EMS Services who work very hard in these areas. 

There are three levels of achievement: bronze, silver, and gold. EMS Services can apply to receive any level award for which they feel criteria has been met, but bronze is a good place to start. Remember, this is not a competition against other services. Every EMS Service meeting the qualifications for a level will receive an award. The same award level can be earned in consecutive years. 

Attached are applications for each level of safety and loss control award – bronze, silver, and gold. Please consider participating in the 2024 EMS Safety and Loss Control Recognition Awards Program! Recipients will receive their awards at the Annual Conference of the South Dakota Ambulance Association (SDAA), taking place on February 10-11, 2024 in Fort Pierre SD.

Safety & Loss Control Recognition Awards

The purpose of these awards is to promote loss control and safety awareness and recognize the many Pool Members who work very hard in these areas.

There are three levels of achievement: bronze, silver and gold. The platinum level will be awarded again this year, but Members do not apply for this level. The platinum award is presented to Members achieving the gold level with a combined loss ratio (3 years; all lines of coverage) of less than 60% for each Pool to which the Member belongs.

Members can apply to receive any level award for which they feel criteria has been met, but bronze is a good place to start. Remember, this is not a competition against other Pool Members. Every Member meeting the qualifications for a level will receive an award. The same award level can be earned in consecutive years.
